So this little cigarette right here has sparked a whole new brand of TFiOS hate, much of which is coming from people who claimed to love the book.
Many people are now pointing out how “pretentious” Augustus is, and I can’t help but think, You’re only just now realizing this. He was written to be a seemingly pretentious and arrogant person. The acknowledgement of this is actually highly important because, without it, the book loses the message that a hero’s journey is that of strength to weakness.
Augustus Waters has big dreams for himself. He wants to be known and remembered; he wants to be a hero; he wants to be seen as perfect. But there’s already something standing in his way… He has a disability, and society tells him that a person cannot be both perfect and disabled. So what does he do? He creates a persona for himself. He tries to appear older and wiser than he is. But the pretentious side of him is NOT who he truly is. It’s all an act. (This is evident in the fact that he often uses words in the wrong context.)
And when his cancer returns, we begin to see his mask cracking. The true Augustus begins to bleed through… Hazel even takes notice of this from time to time. And by the time we get to the gas station scene, Augustus is no longer the picture of perfection he was when we met him. The play has been canceled. The actor must reveal himself. And he’s revealed to be a weak, defenseless boy, succumbing to the cancer that is made of him.
THE PRETENTIOUSNESS IS INTENTIONAL. It stands to show Augustus’s journey from flawless to flawed, from strong to weak. It’s the key to understanding that Augustus was the hero he always wanted to be, even if he didn’t realized it.
Honestly who has fucking time to write these I think john green wrote this post #sassygreen
Honestly, it only took me about five minutes to write this.
Last time I checked, I’m a 22 year old girl.
Seoul-based Korean artist JeeYoung Lee transformed her tiny studio measuring 11.8’ x 13.5’ x 7.8’ (3.6m x 4.1m x 2.4m) into multiple surreal dreamlike worlds sans-photoshop. Lee labors for weeks and months to create the aspects of each scene complete with a multitude of handmade props, suspended objects, and unique lighting requirements; creating even the most minute details by hand. see more via opiom gallery

"THAT SHIRT WITH THOSE SHOES?"
#i think this is a really important scene for martha#because she sees that the doctor is treating jack like shit#and the doctor KNOWS that he did wrong by jack#and yet he still doesn’t seem to care#he’s not apologetic or ashamed - he’s cruel and flippant#”busy life. moving on” because the doctor doesn’t look back#and i think it’s really important for Martha to see that#see that he’s AWARE of what he does#it’s not the doctor being a dick and not realizing it#(which is probably how she’s been rationalizing her experience with him this whole time)#but he’s actively aware that he’s being a douchecanoe and actively choosing to not do anything about it#and for her to realize that is probably one of the turning points for martha#it’s her realizing that the doctor is not being good to her (or for her) and that she needs to think about making a change#because in all actuality s3!doctor is not a man you really should want to be friends with#s1 s2 s4 doctor yes - they’re the doctor and they can be mean and grumpy and scary or whatevs but they’re still a good person#s3 doctor is not a good person#he’s grieving and his grief is turning him into a cold emotionless asshole#and this scene is martha seeing his douchebaggery from an outside pov#and realizing that it’s not okay to just forgive or write off or rationalize his cruelty just because she loves him#i have a lot of martha feelings ok#dw (winterinthetardis)
I will always be grateful for how this was depicted in the film.
